Train Ticket at European level

noticia European Commission has launched a Regulation proposal to facilitate rail transport in Europe to standardize price and schedules information and ticketing.

European commission forces rail operators to standardize information about passenger tickets, fares and schedules, aiming to obtain interoperability and exchange data between companies throughout Europe. Moreover, the Commission will be launch in 2012 a new legal measure to complement this initiative to require rail operators to put online their ICT systems. Thus, standardized data can be transferred between rail operators. These measures are the technical basis to allow a new rail ticketing generation, at EU level, to start to emerge in the market.

Rail sector was evolved at national level with different and non-interoperable data processors. The outcome of this process is that passengers have limited possibilities to buy train tickets in other country from their national operator. In fact, Commission proposal regulate "Telematics applications for passenger services" aiming to obtain data standardization, related to schedules and fares (for instance, kind of train, stops, prizes…). Also, Regulation proposal requires to operators to make public all their information related to schedules and prizes to partners with whom they have agreements.

Adopting these measures, European Commission aims to obtain a new generation ticketing tools and journey planning, accessible to all European citizens who wants to travel by train. Next steps, the Commission is assessing the needs for additional measures to help to remove barriers that are holding back the development of cross border rail and, more broadly, multi modal travel planning and ticketing.
