The Insurance Organisation for the Self-employed will be the first to issue electronic prescriptions

Since 15 October 2010, the Insurance Organisation for the Self-employed (Οργανισμός Ασφάλισης Ελεύθερων Επαγγελματιών - OAEE, in Greek) has started implementing the new rules for electronic filing and electronic prescriptions. According to the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Andreas Loverdos, the measure aims to increase the income of insurance organisations by about €1 billion per year. As reported, the pharmaceutical costs of the insurance organisations reached €5 billion in 2009, which is an amount equivalent to 40 % of the annual state subsidy for them. The level of expenditure depends on several factors, such as, illegal prescribing, the use of virtual prescriptions or their use for other purposes. The share of these costs amounts to 20-25 % of the total sum.
